Call Senator Chuck Schumer About Kavanaugh
Indivisible National is asking all of us to call our senators and tell them that we're against the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Here are phone numbers, email addresses, and scripts:

  • Senator Chuck Schumer. NYC office: (212) 486-4430; DC office: (202) 224-6542
    • Hi, I am a constituent calling from [ZIP CODE] to ask Senator Schumer to unite all Democrats against the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. As minority leader, it's Senator Schumer's job to make that happen. He MUST whip the vote and demand that all Democrats vote no to Kavanaugh. We've been calling on him to do that since the nomination was announced and I would like him to commit to this action now.
  • Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. NYC office: (212) 688-6262; DC office:  (202) 224-4451
    • Hi, I am a constituent calling from [ZIP CODE] to thank Senator Gillibrand for her strong stance against the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. All Democrats should do the same, and I've been calling Senator Schumer to ask that he whip the vote to unite the Democrats if there is anyone hesitating. Will Senator Gillibrand please inform her colleague that constituents are now calling her office about this issue because there's been no commitment from him?

Bonus action:

  • Email Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
    • I am not a constituent of yours but I am writing because your vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will affect the entire nation for decades. Kavanaugh's attacks on Roe v. Wade will undermine the ability of women through the U.S. to control their lives, and that includes the women who are your constituents. (And I'm sure you are familiar with studies that show the majority of women seeking abortions are poor and already have children.) I urge you to at least insist that no confirmation can proceed without the release of all Kavanaugh-related documents, just as the Republicans demanded complete documentation on all Democratic Supreme Court nominees. Please put people above political party and do the right thing for all women living in the U.S.

Email Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
Email the Republican senators considered most likely to be swayed against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh (contact links above). Here is our suggested text, but please remember that a personalized message is always best if you have the time:

  • I am not a constituent of yours but I am writing because your vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will affect the entire nation for decades. Kavanaugh's attacks on Roe v. Wade will undermine the ability of women through the U.S. to control their lives, and that includes the women who are your constituents. I urge you to at least insist that no confirmation can proceed without the release of all Kavanaugh-related documents, just as the Republicans demanded complete documentation on all Democratic Supreme Court nominees. Please put people above political party and do the right thing for all women living in the U.S.

Separately, a fundraising campaign is underway to fund a Democratic opponent to Collins if she follows party line on Kavanaugh. Learn more about that and donate here.

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to begin confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh on Sept. 4, even though years of documents related to his time in the Bush White House remain unavailable for review. One thing we do know is that Kavanaugh plans to gut Roe v Wade, so even though Democrats are the minority, every Dem senator should stand up for our values and vote as one. As minority leader, Senator Chuck Schumer is responsible for organizing the votes. Phone number and script provided.

Counterprotest a Racist Rally in Front of the White House
Lafayette Square
Washington, D.C.
1 p.m. - 12 a.m.

"Why aren't people out on the streets protesting every day?" is a question that is asked a lot. Well, people ARE protesting every day -- the news sources you follow just aren't reporting it.  You can see committed protest for yourself if you go to D.C. today to join #OccupyLafayettePark (aka #KremlinAnnex) -- a nightly protest outside the White House that's marking its fourth week of continuous action. This day's protest is particularly important because there is a racist, fascist, and white supremacist rally scheduled to take place to commemorate the fatal terrorist action that took place in Charlottesville one year ago. Organizers of the counterprotest say, "It's critically important that we don't allow [that] message to go unanswered." Hop on a bus or train and be part of the answer. Please review the below disclaimer on lawful, non-violent protest before you get there.

Fundraiser for No IDC NY
Brass Monkey
55 Little West 12th St.
7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Indivisible Upper East Side is one of the co-sponsors of this fundraiser for the No IDC NY candidates. These are the true Democrats running against the eight state senators of the Independent Democratic Conference. The IDC senators have been scamming constituents for years by running as Democrats but voting with Republicans in order to quash progressive legislation in New York State. We need real Democrats not only on the federal level but on the state level too. Buy a ticket -- or make a donation -- to be a supporter.

Share a Link About September's Primary
The Thursday, September 13, state primary is less than two months away. Yes, we just had a federal primary in June. New York is the only state in the nation that has separate state and federal primary elections in this exceptionally important year. Republicans in the state forced this situation. Confusion and lower voter turnout benefits them. It is urgent that you spread the word about the September primary to your family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. We must flip the New York State Senate blue to get voting reform so this doesn't happen again. Share this New York Times link with people you know and help them understand the importance of their vote. You can refer to Tuesday's information about the IDC to make your point.

Contact Chuck Schumer Two Times
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is flat-out refusing to do his job, which is to use all the powers in his command to unite the Democrats against the extremist and unqualified Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh. As his constituent, you should contact him in two different ways today and tell him that he needs to act like the Minority Leader should and whip the vote. First, call his office at 212-486-4430. Then contact him electronically via Resistbot by texting the word RESIST to 50409. Resistbot is available 24/7 and after you set your account up, additional free messages will take you two minutes or less to send, so you can do this outside the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need a script, you can work from this letter that our group sent to Schumer at our July meeting.

Learn About Continuing Demonstrations in NYC and DC
For members who have inquired about committed, on-the-ground, "occupation"-type demonstrations, Occupy ICE NYC began in New York's Foley Square on June 26 with the goal of disrupting deportations and offering aid to families facing deportation in the form of food, first aid, and legal referrals. Click here to read about the group's demands and how you can contribute needed supplies to demonstrators. You can also join the demonstration yourself. If you're prepared to travel to Washington, D.C., for a ongoing protest, Occupy Lafayette Park launched last Monday -- in front of the White House -- after the Trump-Putin meeting. The organizers are looking forward to the delivery of a "new and very loud sound system" today. If you can't join the protest in person, you can contribute to the food, water, and security needs of the protestors via GoFundMe. Before joining these or any other demonstrations, please re-read the disclaimer at the bottom of this newsletter acknowledging the risks involved and agreeing to participate non-violently and in accordance with the law.

Tell Chuck Schumer to Whip the Vote Against Kavanaugh
New York Senator and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer MUST unite Democrats against the unacceptable, far-right Supreme Court nominee Bret Kavanaugh. In his leadership role, Schumer has the power to apply pressure on Democrats for key votes, but he has failed to do so. This might be the most crucial vote of all, and Democrats need to stand as one. Call Schumer's office at 212-486-4430. You can use this letter as the basis for your message.

  • In addition to or in lieu of a phone call, send the same message to Schumer electronically via Resistbot. Text the word RESIST to 50409 and the bot will guide you through the process.

Thursday, July 26, 2018
Attorney General Candidate Forum
Commons Cafe
388 Atlantic Avenue
Brooklyn
7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Join Empire State Indivisible and the True Blue NY Coalition for a moderated candidate forum for New York Attorney General. This is your opportunity to hear from the candidates running for this critical position. Jarret Berg, the Executive Director of the New York Democratic Lawyer's Council will moderate the discussion."  Register for the event here.

Friday, July 27, 2018
Use Resistbot and Share With a Friend
Text RESIST to 50409 to send a message to your elected officials in under two minutes via Resistbot. If you haven't done it before, you will have to answer a few questions to get it set up. (The bot needs your location in order to direct you to the right officials, and your name in order to sign your messages.) After the initial set-up, you'll be able to get right to the issues. Resistbot is a free service, available 24/7, across the country. After you send a message about whatever is on your mind, find one person who hasn't used Resistbot and walk that person through the process. All government officials tally the number of calls/emails/etc. they receive every day, and track the topics of the communications. When they don't hear from you, they think you don't care.

Loved seeing the Baby Trump Blimp soaring above the anti-Trump protestors in London? An activist in New Jersey has successfully raised enough money for a U.S. blimp to be built. Now you can contribute towards sending Baby Trump on a tour of America. New York City will be one of the stops.

Actions for Week of July 9, 2018

Monday, July 9, 2018 - THREE SUPREME COURT-RELATED ACTIONS

(1) Whip the Vote, Chuck! Rally
780 Third Ave. (between 48th and 49th Streets)
5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Trump is announcing his pick for the Supreme Court and we are joining other Indivisible chapters to let Senator Chuck Schumer know we want him to “whip the vote” — in other words, unite Democrats to vote against Trump’s nominee. Bring signs and friends!

  • Need a better understanding of what Schumer SHOULD be doing in his role of minority leader and how he has failed to unite Democrats on key votes? Click here.

(2) Protest Trump's Fascist Supreme Court Pick
Union Square
8 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Refuse Facism is holding a rally to protest a Supreme Court stacked by a president who is under criminal investigation. Monday's rally will be followed by an organizing meeting on Wednesday, where you can learn more about the group's activities.

(3) Send a Resistbot to Chuck Schumer
Text the word RESIST to 50409 to use Resistbot to send a message to Schumer. Keep in mind that that a week ago, he canceled a town hall -- citing transportation problems that didn't emerge until people were already gathering at the location. That was his first town hall in a year and he has yet to reschedule. Accordingly, the suggested Resistbot message is for Schumer to both whip the vote against a disastrous Trump Supreme Court and to reschedule a meeting with his constituents so he can understand our level of concern.

Tuesday, July 10, 2018
Rally to Save Roe
Union Square
4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Roe v. Wade is on the line: There are over 20 states where abortion could become illegal overnight. Speakers at this rally will include New York State Senator Liz Krueger, gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon, State Senate candidate for NY-13 Jessica Ramos, and Heidi Sieck with # VOTEPROCHOICE.

Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Four Freedoms and other Democratic clubs are hosting a forum featuring candidates and campaign representatives seeking support for their races for Attorney General. This is your chance to become acquainted with the candidates in order to make an informed voting decision. Confirmed attendees are Zephyr Teachout, Leecia Eve, and NYC Public Advocate Letitia "Tish" James. Space is limited, so please RSVP here.

80th and Lex, Basement Level
7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.

All are welcome to attend our monthly meeting, whether you live on the Upper East Side, elsewhere in Manhattan, or are just passing through. Our guest speaker will be Tia Christiansen,  a survivor of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, who now advocates against gun violence as part of Everytown.

Send a Resistbot Message to Andrew Cuomo
Our group has spoken frequently about the Independent Democratic Conference -- the eight state senators who run as Democrats but caucus with Republicans, preventing any progressive legislation from passing. Governor Andrew Cuomo has tolerated this situation for years, preferring the stalemate to effective action. (The IDC's recent promise to disband cannot be believed; the group has made that promise before and reneged after elections.) Because of this situation, New York State's abortion law has not been updated since 1970; it was simply superseded by Roe v. Wade. With Roe v. Wade under attack, we're going to repeat our message from last week: Cuomo must support anti-IDC candidates in order to reform state law. Need help with your text? Click here and scroll down.

Get Out the Vote in a Swing District
Meet in lobby of 240 West 98th Street
Meeting time: 10 a.m.
Return to NYC: 7 p.m.

Upper West Side MoveOn/Indivisible is organizing a drive  to New Paltz, N.Y., to canvass with Ulster Action/NY19 Votes. You'll be knocking on the doors of registered Democrats to tell them how important it is to vote in the midterm elections, and get them to commit to helping flip the House blue. Face-to-face interaction is one of the most effective ways to increase voter turnout, so your participation is important. At 4 p.m., canvassers will attend a rally featuring the Democratic candidate for Congress Antonio Delgado, who is running against Republican John Faso.

Call Senators Collins and Murkowski
Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska are considered to be the only possible defectors from the Republican side on the Supreme Court vote. While you are not their constituents, their votes will have nationwide impact, therefore it is appropriate for you to call. If the staff members challenge you about your location, you should politely remind them that the Supreme Court is NOT a state issue.

  • Senator Collins. Telephone: (207) 622-8414. Other office phone numbers listed here. Suggested script: "I'm calling to ask Senator Collins to vote against Trump's shortlist for the Supreme Court. She has already said she would not support a nominee who demonstrates hostility to Roe v. Wade. All of Trump's possible nominees are hostile to Roe v. Wade, and Trump has said openly that he plans to overturn Roe v. Wade. Please ask the senator to commit to protecting women's rights rather than her party."
  • Senator Murkowski. Telephone: (907) 271-3735. Other office numbers listed here. Suggested script: "I'm calling to ask Senator Murkowski to vote against Trump's shortlist for the Supreme Court. The senator has stated in the past that she recognizes the legality of Roe v. Wade, despite her personal feelings on abortion. She's right -- this is an extremely personal decision that a woman should make with her doctor. All of Trump's candidates are openly against Roe v. Wade, so I hope the senator will choose women's rights over her party."

Get Ready for Tuesday's Federal Primaries -- MULTIPLE OPTIONS
Ahead of Tuesday's federal primaries, you can help get out the vote. As Ben Yee --  Secretary of the New York County Democratic Party and State Committeeman for New York's 66th Assembly District -- explained at our meeting earlier this month, one of the most important things you can do is vote in primaries. Change at the national level isn't possible without engagement at the local level.

(1) Get Informed Via Video and SHARE

(2) Get Out the Vote With Team Maloney or Patel
Volunteer for phonebanking, canvassing, or visibility raising by contacting Maloney's team here.  There are shifts throughout the day, Monday and Tuesday. To contact Patel's organizers, click here.

(3) Join Lexington Democratic Club Petitioning
E. 78th St. & Park Ave., SE corner
6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Join one of our local Democratic clubs to petition on behalf of candidates, which also raises awareness of the election in general. The shift will be captained by an experienced petitioner, so you'll have support if you're trying it for the first time.
