Contact Cuomo About Early Voting
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and top lawmakers struck a deal on a $168 billion state budget in the middle of the night on Friday. The State Senate's final budget failed to include funding for early voting, even though both Cuomo and the Assembly included that money in their proposed budgets. Thirty-seven other states already allow early voting, and those states see better voter turnout than New York does. The majority of New Yorkers support early voting; the only people who do not are the politicians who benefit from suppressing the vote. The New York State budget is scheduled to be finalized this Thursday, and we need to be sure it includes funds for early voting, as Governor Cuomo promised. Thirty-seven other states have early voting and New York does not, which is one of the reasons we have among the lowest voter turnout in the nation. Use Let NY Vote's online tool to place your call. Script: "I'm calling from New York's Upper East Side, zip code 10028, to ask the governor to only approve a budget that includes funds for early voting. No budget without early voting."

As discussed in our meetings and this newsletter, the IDC is a group of eight state senators who run as Democrats but vote with Republicans, repeatedly quashing progressive legislation that would protect New Yorkers from rollbacks of federal laws. The March for Our Lives protest against gun violence takes place Saturday, March 24, in D.C., New York City, and sister cities around the nation.

  • For the D.C. march: While Indivisible UES doesn't have enough D.C.-bound participants to organize a bus of our own, you can use Rally Bus to view other round-trip bus options. Please be aware that all buses are leaving very early in the morning. Two options as of this writing are:
    • Leaving from 31st and 8th at 4:56 a.m., $90 round-trip.
    • Leaving from 31st and 8th at 4:50 a.m., $95 round-trip.

The official march entrance is at Central Park West and 72nd St., with attendees encouraged to begin arriving at 10 a.m. The NYPD will push the entrance north as necessary for crowd size.

What you should bring: Weather-appropriate clothing, signs (no metal or wood allowed), phone and charger, snacks, water, the desire to create change, and patience.  As is typical for large demonstrations, "the procession will be slow-moving and difficult to exit," as Thrillist put it.  Should you have concerns about the crowd size, pace of march, length of rally, speakers, route, time spent standing, NYPD crowd control, or any other issues, please direct those towards the event organizers or the police commissioner, whichever is appropriate. The executive committee of Indivisible UES was not involved in the planning of this event and cannot answer questions or field complaints on behalf of the organizers and/or New York City. 1. 10 Years After the Crash: Don't Repeat History at the NY Fed

From Fed Up's event page: "The most powerful position in America that Donald Trump doesn't control is the President of the New York Fed -- and they're choosing a new one RIGHT NOW ... Most of us still haven't healed from the 2008 crash. While the Senate passes Dodd-Frank repeal, and our regulatory institutions are dismantled, the NY Fed is an even more vital last line of defense. Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell can't choose the next NY Fed President, the NY Fed Board does -- and they need to hear from us."

2. Make Calls to Protest Bank Deregulation Bill
As noted above, the Senate is poised to take up legislation that would repeal parts of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act, the landmark financial regulation overhaul enacted in response to the 2008 financial crisis. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she will oppose it; Minority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer also opposes the bill, but the Washington Post says he has taken a "hands-off approach to the debate thus far." Call both senators and use Indivisible's script to urge them to protect us from another crash.

Tell 5 People About the IDC
This action was suggested by Indivisible Brooklyn: Educate at least five fellow New Yorkers about the Independent Democratic Conference. The IDC is a group of eight state senators who run for election as Democrats but vote as Republicans, consistently preventing any progressive bills from becoming law. Many New Yorkers don't know this group exists, so pick five and let them know about it. You can share our fact sheet and this video voiced by Edie Falco.

New York State has one of the worst voter turnouts in the nation: In 2016, we were 41st. This is partly because the state makes voting so difficult. Governor Cuomo has put $7 million in his budget for early voting. Now the state assembly and senate have to pass it. Let NY Vote has chosen today to flood our state representatives with calls in support of the voting initiative. Click here to verify the names of your elected officials and here for phone numbers and a script.  (If you're on the Upper East Side, Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright and Senator Liz Krueger are already in favor of early voting, so adjust the script to thank them for their support.)

Watch, Read, and Update Your Calendar - 3 ACTIONS
1. The survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., have made it clear that the epidemic of school shootings must come to an end. Student Emma Gonzalez had a message for Congress: "This is our fight now, because you messed it up so badly that you left it to the kids. Now it’s our job, and you can’t try to take that back from us.”

2. Alec MacGillis of ProPublica points out that -- until now -- defeatism on the left has helped the NRA maintain power that has in reality been on the wane. Not only CAN things change, they already WERE changing, even before Parkland, MacGillis says.

3. Students are planning two separate walkouts to say #NeverAgain to gun violence. Add these dates to your calendar. (The Women's March is also planning an event for March 14.) We will need volunteers to help organize Indivisible UES participation; contact info@indivisible-ues.org to submit your name.

  • March 24: March for Our Lives. Kids, parents, and other supporters will take to the streets of Washington, D.C., and other cities to call for an end to gun violence and mass shootings.
  • April 20: National School Walkout. On the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, students plan to attend school and then walk out at 10 a.m. in a peaceful protest. Indivisible members should be ready to join local sit-ins.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act: Text RESIST to 50409
Text RESIST to 50409 to use ResistBot to contact New York senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand about the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This bill-- which passed the House last year and will be taken up by the Senate this year -- would force states to recognize other states’ standards governing the possession of concealed firearms in public. That means people from concealed-carry states would be free to carry their weapons in New York. Schumer and Gillibrand have already condemned this NRA-backed bill, so thank them for their stance then ask them to hold televised town halls in New York City that would feature young people speaking out about gun violence.

Mail a Worthless Check to Marco Rubio
The day after the massacre in his home state, Florida senator and former presidential candidate Marco Rubio claimed gun laws wouldn't have prevented the murder of 17 people. Rubio has also accepted money from the NRA, which gives him an A+ rating. Let's see how Rubio likes getting thoughts and prayers instead of money. Here's how:

  1. Get out your checkbook.
  2. Black out your account and routing info.
  3. Pay to the order of Marco Rubio.
  4. Fill in amount as "Thoughts & Prayers"
  5. Write "campaign contribution" in the memo line.
  6. Write a note that says: "Since you think that this is the solution to mass murder, please accept my contribution."
  7. Mail it to Sen. Marco Rubio, 8669 NW 36th Street, Suite 110, Doral, FL 33166

Do this activity with at least one other person, then send your checks out at the same time to make more of a statement.

Rise and Resist's weekly impeachment protest (co-sponsored by Gays Against Guns and Sing Out, Louise) will show solidarity with the Parkland, Fla., students. The protest's Facebook page says, "Elected officials that allow children to die from gun violence without proposing solutions shouldn't be allowed to hold office ... We call out Trump and any elected official that risks all our lives in exchange for NRA campaign money."

The American Women's Party says it will have voter-registration tables out at three anti-gun protests.  Millions of young people will be eligible to vote for the first time this November, and their participation is crucial. Sign up to help the voter registration effort via the American Women's Party website or by email.

No Valentine's Day plans? Invite friends/family/neighbors over to participate in a voter-to-voter letter-writing project to oust Republican Rep. John Faso from New York's 19th Congressional District. (Rom-coms and Valentine's Day candy are optional.) Faso won the last election by only 26,000 votes, so the bigger the turnout, the better. We did this project in last week's Indivisible UES meeting. ResistBot is an incredibly easy and effective way to stay in close contact with your elected officials. It's available 24/7, nationwide.  All you need is a cell phone. Text the word "RESIST" to 50409, and the bot will guide you through the rest. Tell your senators, representative, and/or governor what's on your mind.  Then share ResistBot information with everyone you know, whether that's via Facebook, Twitter, email, and in-person. This is something people can do on their lunch break, on the train to work, at 2 a.m., while walking the dog -- it's that simple. Just don't do it while you're driving, please.

At our meetings, we've spoken a lot about the Independent Democratic Conference -- the gang of eight New York State senators who run as Democrats but vote for the Republican agenda, making it impossible for any progressive legislation to pass the state senate. Indivisible Brooklyn Do or Die is hosting a fundraiser for Zellnor Myrie, who is running against IDC member Jessie Hamilton. Myrie is a lawyer who has done pro bono work for Legal Aid. He supports affordable housing, immigrants' rights, fully funding public education, women's reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, and environmental justice. Can't make it to Brooklyn? Read and Share: "The Other Women's March on Washington"
"What’s the fastest way to fix a broken system? Take it over, say the record number of female candidates running for office in 2018 for the first time," wrote Rebecca Traister in New York Magazine last month. If you missed Traister's story about "the other women's march on Washington" -- including 390 women planning to run for the House of Representatives -- read it here, then share it by email, Facebook, and/or Twitter. This is a major resistance movement that deserves your attention and support. Among the compelling statistics: Run for Something — launched last year to recruit first-time candidates younger than 35 — expected around 100 people to sign up in year one. Instead, 15,000 did.
