Protest Abuse of Immigrants; Support Patricia Okoumou

Patricia Okoumou is the activist who climbed the base of the Statue of Liberty on July 4 to draw attention to the Trump regime's immigration policies, particularly the inhumane separation of children from their families. (There are now almost 15,000 migrant children in nearly full detention camps.) Patricia sought a jury trial and was denied. Her bench trial is today. A show of community support is impactful in situations like this. If you can show up for her, please do. Otherwise, share this information in case someone you know can help support Patricia.

RSVP to de Blasio's Town Hall on Wednesday
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is holding a town hall at Hunter College on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. You can register to attend here. Issues to address include, but are not limited to:

  • The MTA is in a state of collapse, and the biggest subway system in the world might raise fares while cutting services.

  • New York City Housing Authority residents are going without heat and hot water.

  • The City University of New York system is underfunded, schools are physically crumbling, tuition is rising, and food-staff workers live in poverty.

  • Meanwhile, the city is giving a big tax break to Amazon to build a new headquarters in already overdeveloped Long Island City.

Join activist group Rise and Resist in a procession starting from Fox News (48th and 6th Ave.) The group will carry banners, photographs, and placards to remind everyone that there are thousands of refugees being prevented by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from legally seeking asylum. The procession will call on the Trump administration to immediately process all asylum seekers on the border, and to stop arresting and detaining refugees.

Submit Comment to Fight Green-Card Limitations
This is the last day to submit a comment on the Department of Homeland Security's proposal to drastically limit the number of immigrants who can obtain green cards.  According to the proposal, working documented immigrants who take advantage of benefits for which they are eligible -- such as Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers, and Medicare drug assistance -- would no longer be eligible to apply for legal permanent status. (1) Flood Your Reps With Calls Protesting Tear Gas
On Sunday, U.S. Border Patrol agents fired tear gas at immigrants -- including families with young children -- who were trying to cross from Mexico. We need to flood the offices of our members of Congress with calls telling them how unacceptable this is. (Remember, even if our electeds agree with us, we want them to be able to say that their constituents are furious too.) Indivisible Nation BK has provided helpful scripts here.

(2) Fight Amazon, Protect Queens

The Department of Homeland Security has announced a proposal to drastically limit the number of immigrants who can obtain green cards.  According to the proposal, working documented immigrants who take advantage of benefits for which they are eligible, such as Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers, and even Medicare drug assistance would no longer be eligible to apply for legal permanent status. (1) CUNY vs Amazon Rally

The City University of New York Board of Trustees has declared its support for a $3 billion public investment in Amazon, and has pledged CUNY resources to the cause -- without the input of students or faculty. (The rally organizers say that making CUNY tuition-free again would cost $800 million.)  The protest will be outside of the offices of CUNY Board Chairman Bill Thompson, demanding that he rescind his statement in support of Amazon.

(2) Protest Amazon by Phone
If you can't make an in-person appearance at one of the Amazon protests, you can still call Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio and tell them this deal can't go through without public scrutiny. Phone numbers and script have been provided by Indivisible Nation BK on Facebook and here.

Support John Barrow in Georgia
Democrat John Barrow will be in a Dec. 4 runoff election for secretary of state for Georgia, facing Republican State Representative Brad Raffensperger. The secretary of state job was previously held by Republican Brian Kemp, who successfully used the powers of the position to suppress Democratic votes while he ran for governor. If a Democrat succeeds Kemp, Georgia will be on its way to truly free and fair elections.

Message Cuomo About the Amazon Deal
Last week, it was announced that Amazon would be getting big tax breaks to set up a headquarters in Long Island City. Two days later, New York City's deteriorating and underfunded transportation system ground to a halt during a winter storm.  Tell Governor Andrew Cuomo that we should be collecting revenue from companies like Amazon to invest in New York City services -- including, but not limited to the MTA -- instead of cutting deals and hoping for a trickle-down effect that will never come. Georgia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, is still fighting to get all ballots counted correctly. Volunteers are tracking down ballots by phone and on foot, according to the AP, and the Georgia Democrats are looking for volunteers to phone bank or travel to Georgia to assist.

BREAKING NEWS: In response to significant Democratic gains on Election Day, Trump has forced out Jeff Sessions as attorney general and nominated as his replacement Matthew Whitaker, a critic of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.  Trump's action has set into motion previously established activist plans to protest efforts to derail the Russia probe. Below is the information on the Thursday, Nov. 8, protest, as well as a reminder about our November meeting, which will take place Thursday evening as scheduled.

Monday - Tuesday, November 5 - 6: FINAL VOTER OUTREACH OPTIONS

Activities that can be done from wherever you are (home, office, school):

  1. MONDAY and TUESDAY: Send texts to remind New York Democrats to vote.

  2. MONDAY and TUESDAY: Remind personal contacts in swing districts to vote.

  3. MONDAY and TUESDAY: Phone bank or text bank for candidates throughout the U.S. with Indivisible's national team.

  4. MONDAY: Phone bank for Jen Metzger for New York State Senate.

  5. MONDAY: Phone bank for Dana Balter (New York Congressional District 24).

Activities that get you out and about:

  1. MONDAY and TUESDAY: Help turn New York's Senate True Blue by volunteering for the anti-IDC candidates and other Democrats. An extensive list of volunteer options can be found here.

  2. TUESDAY, 8 a.m.: Catch a bus for Election-Day canvassing for Antonio Delgado in Congressional District 19 OR Liuba Grechen Shirley in Congressional District 2. (Make sure you vote before you get on the bus! Polls open at 6 a.m.)

  3. TUESDAY, VARIOUS SHIFTS: Canvass for Max Rose in Congressional District 11 (Brooklyn or Staten Island).

**Tuesday, November 6 - ELECTION-DAY RESOURCES**

  1. VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! Polls are open from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m.  If you get there AT 9 p.m., stay in line. As long as you get in the door, officials must keep the poll site open for you.

  2. Confirm your voter registration one last time. Voters have been purged from the rolls in recent days. Be safe, not sorry, and know what to expect. Check your voter registration.

  3. Check your poll site, even if you've voted in the same place for decades and as recently as September. There have been changes made in poll site organization in the recent days. Find your poll site. BONUS: You can get information on what's on your ballot at this link.

  4. Bring ID just in case. If you've voted before in New York City, you should NOT be asked for ID -- but again, better safe than sorry.

  5.  If you cannot be found on the voter-registration rolls at your correct polling site, request an "affidavit ballot." You are entitled to one by law. In addition to the ballot itself, you will have to fill out information on the envelope that the affidavit ballot goes into. Be very careful with the envelope information; if there is something incorrect on it, the envelope will not be opened. 

  6. Is something still preventing you or someone you know from voting? Call 866-OUR-VOTE or text the words "Our Vote" to 97779. Trained volunteers will be standing by.

  7. Be an informed voter:

  3. Take a bus to canvass for state senate candidate Monica Martinez and congressional candidate Liuba Grechen Shirley. Meeting time is 11 a.m. in East Harlem. The day includes a rally at 12:45 p.m.

  4. Join a phone banking and text banking event to flip the New York State Senate. In Brooklyn, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.


Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018 - ELECTION DAY

  1. Vote when the polls open at 6 a.m. and then catch a bus at 8 a.m. -- there will be two buses. One will be heading to canvass for Antonio Delgado, the other for Liuba Grechen Shirley.

  2. Volunteer for Max Rose in Staten Island or Brooklyn.

Ben Yee, Manhattan Democrats secretary, says the New York Democratic County Committee will be considering proposed changes to party rules. He writes that several are minor corrections, but there is "significant controversy regarding a proposal to ban lobbyists or people whose employer's primary business is lobbying from being County Leader. " This issue should be of interest to those who are seeking to enhance transparency in local leadership.

Max Rose is running for Congress in New York’s 11th Congressional District, representing Staten Island and South Brooklyn. He is the first post-9/11 combat veteran of the war in Afghanistan to seek office in New York City. The campaign has plenty of volunteers for the weekend days.
