Protest Abuse of Immigrants; Support Patricia Okoumou
500 Pearl Street Federal Court
9 a.m.

Patricia Okoumou is the activist who climbed the base of the Statue of Liberty on July 4 to draw attention to the Trump regime's immigration policies, particularly the inhumane separation of children from their families. (There are now almost 15,000 migrant children in nearly full detention camps.) Patricia sought a jury trial and was denied. Her bench trial is today. A show of community support is impactful in situations like this. If you can show up for her, please do. Otherwise, share this information in case someone you know can help support Patricia.

Actions for Week of November 26, 2018

Monday, Nov. 26, 2018 - TWO ACTIONS
(1) Flood Your Reps With Calls Protesting Tear Gas
On Sunday, U.S. Border Patrol agents fired tear gas at immigrants -- including families with young children -- who were trying to cross from Mexico. We need to flood the offices of our members of Congress with calls telling them how unacceptable this is. (Remember, even if our electeds agree with us, we want them to be able to say that their constituents are furious too.) Indivisible Nation BK has provided helpful scripts here.

You can also use ResistBot. Text the word "Resist" to 50409 to get started. The app will guide you through the next steps.

(2) Fight Amazon, Protect Queens
Court Square Park
Long Island City
5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

On the online shopping day known as "Cyber Monday," join a rally against online giant Amazon, which got a big tax break for a new headquarters in Long Island City -- an area that's already struggling with too little investment in infrastructure, housing, and education

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018  - TWO ACTIONS
(1) Phone Bank for Mike Espy in Mississippi
Democrat Mike Espy is in a runoff election for senator in Mississippi and Election Day is TODAY. Day-of phone calls can be very helpful. Sign up for a shift with the Working Families Party. You'll get all the information you need before you start calling.

(2) People's Hearing on Voting Rights & Reform in New York
First Unitarian Congregational Society
119 Pierrepont Street
Brooklyn
7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

From the organizers: "Join Let New York Vote and Common Cause/NY for a People's Hearing on Voting Rights & Reform. Let NY Vote will bring together voters, community groups, elected officials and other stakeholders to discuss voting in our state and the reforms New York so desperately needs! New Yorkers are encouraged to testify and share their story and discuss potential solutions to these systemic problems. We will be joined by City Council Member Jumaane Williams, Michael Blake, and Nomiki Konst."

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018 - TWO IMMIGRANT-RELATED ACTIONS
(1) Submit Comment to Fight the "Public Charge" Proposal
The Department of Homeland Security has announced a proposal to drastically limit the number of immigrants who can obtain green cards.  According to the proposal, working documented immigrants who take advantage of benefits for which they are eligible, such as Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers, and even Medicare drug assistance would no longer be eligible to apply for legal permanent status. The administration must accept public comments on the proposal until December 10. Click here to submit your comment -- remember, it's best to personalize your message as much as possible.

(2) Accompaniment Training
Congregation Beth Elohim
274 Garfield Pl
Brooklyn
6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

New Sanctuary Coalition will train volunteers to accompany people facing deportation to their immigration hearings and ICE check-ins. This provides moral support to the person facing deportation and enables volunteers to hold immigration authorities accountable.

Get to Know Indivisible's Strategy

The national group says its original guide was about defense. Now we get to play offense. To understand our activism strategy going forward for both the federal and local levels, read up!

Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 - TWO AMAZON-RELATED ACTIONS
(1) CUNY vs Amazon Rally
100 Wall Street
11 a.m.

The City University of New York Board of Trustees has declared its support for a $3 billion public investment in Amazon, and has pledged CUNY resources to the cause -- without the input of students or faculty. (The rally organizers say that making CUNY tuition-free again would cost $800 million.)  The protest will be outside of the offices of CUNY Board Chairman Bill Thompson, demanding that he rescind his statement in support of Amazon.

(2) Protest Amazon by Phone
If you can't make an in-person appearance at one of the Amazon protests, you can still call Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio and tell them this deal can't go through without public scrutiny. Phone numbers and script have been provided by Indivisible Nation BK on Facebook and here.

Actions for Week of November 19 - 25, 2018

Monday, November 19, 2018
Support John Barrow in Georgia
Democrat John Barrow will be in a Dec. 4 runoff election for secretary of state for Georgia, facing Republican State Representative Brad Raffensperger. The secretary of state job was previously held by Republican Brian Kemp, who successfully used the powers of the position to suppress Democratic votes while he ran for governor. If a Democrat succeeds Kemp, Georgia will be on its way to truly free and fair elections.

Tuesday, November 20, 2018
Message Cuomo About the Amazon Deal
Last week, it was announced that Amazon would be getting big tax breaks to set up a headquarters in Long Island City. Two days later, New York City's deteriorating and underfunded transportation system ground to a halt during a winter storm.  Tell Governor Andrew Cuomo that we should be collecting revenue from companies like Amazon to invest in New York City services -- including, but not limited to the MTA -- instead of cutting deals and hoping for a trickle-down effect that will never come. Use Resistbot to send a fax to Cuomo -- text the word "RESIST" to 50409 to get started.

The residents and allies of Philadelphia must stand in opposition to this escalation of the far-right’s push into the city’s culture and politics. We are urging people recognize the seriousness and danger of this situation, and come out to oppose them on November 17th at Washington Square in Center City Philadelphia. There is safety in numbers, so to ensure the protection of vulnerable individuals and communities, it is imperative that as many people as possible show up in opposition. What to bring: Noise makers, signs, water, warm clothing and comfortable shoes, your friends and neighbors."

**Tuesday, November 6 - ELECTION-DAY RESOURCES**

  1. VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! Polls are open from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m.  If you get there AT 9 p.m., stay in line. As long as you get in the door, officials must keep the poll site open for you.

  2. Confirm your voter registration one last time. Voters have been purged from the rolls in recent days. Be safe, not sorry, and know what to expect. Check your voter registration.

  3. Check your poll site, even if you've voted in the same place for decades and as recently as September. There have been changes made in poll site organization in the recent days. Find your poll site. BONUS: You can get information on what's on your ballot at this link.

  4. Bring ID just in case. If you've voted before in New York City, you should NOT be asked for ID -- but again, better safe than sorry.

  5.  If you cannot be found on the voter-registration rolls at your correct polling site, request an "affidavit ballot." You are entitled to one by law. In addition to the ballot itself, you will have to fill out information on the envelope that the affidavit ballot goes into. Be very careful with the envelope information; if there is something incorrect on it, the envelope will not be opened.

  6. Is something still preventing you or someone you know from voting? Call 866-OUR-VOTE or text the words "Our Vote" to 97779. Trained volunteers will be standing by.

  7. Be an informed voter:

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Attend an Election-night watch party with the New York Democrats. 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. Reservation is required.

Wednesday, November 7, 2018
