(1) Check Your Voter Registration
The November 6 midterm elections are our best chance to halt the far-right takeover of our country. The deadline for voter registration in New York is October 12 (registrations sent by mail must be postmarked as of that date and received by a board of elections no later than October 17).
The easiest way to register to vote online is through the DMV's website.
Already registered? Make sure you haven't been purged from the rolls by checking your status here. Purges are happening in New York as well as other states.
Today's action: Ask five people to register or check their registration.

Chip In for the Mass Bail Out
As the New York Times reported in 2015, "Every year, thousands of innocent people are sent to jail only because they can’t afford to post bail, putting them at risk of losing their jobs, custody of their children — even their lives." Last year, the Huffington Post reported that this level of incarceration -- for people accused but not convicted of misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies -- costs the city over $100 million annually. There are now 8,500 people locked up in Rikers because they can't afford bail. The Mass Bail Out project, which launched this Monday, aims to pay bail to release hundreds of women and children from Rikers.

(1) Call Chuck Schumer
Participate in a call relay to Chuck Schumer by signing up for a time on this sheet. Tell his staff it is time for all Democrats in the Senate to demand the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court be withdrawn. As minority leader, Schumer is in the position to make that happen. The idea of a call relay is to keep the office phones ringing all day, so pick a time and make the call. Suggested script and phone numbers are provided on the document.
If you absolutely can't call, use Resistbot to send a message electronically. Text the word RESIST to 50409, and the bot will walk you through the rest.

Comment About the Indefinite Detention of Immigrant Families
The Trump administration has plans to detain migrant families together in custody rather than release them, according to a new court filing that suggests such detentions could last longer than the 20 days envisioned by a court settlement. This is being spun as a way to end the separation of young refugee children from their families, but it actually means that entire families will be sent to detention camps together. Actions for Week of September 17, 2018
We had success in the primaries: Six of the New York State Senate candidates challenging the eight fake Democrats of the Independent Democratic Conference won their races. However, all of those IDC members could run on a third-party ballot line in the general election. We need to keep up the pressure to flip the state senate.

(1) Call Chuck Schumer About Kavanaugh
The news about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh keeps getting worse. Now an accusation of sexual assault has come into the open. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for a delay in the vote on Kavanaugh that is currently scheduled for Thursday. However, a delay isn't enough and Schumer still hasn't committed to whipping the Democratic vote against Kavanaugh -- meaning that he would use his powers as minority leader to guarantee that all Democrats in the senate are united against this unsuitable candidate. Call Schumer's office and tell a staff member (a) that you'd like to thank the senator for calling for the delay in the vote but (b) he still needs to unite the Democrats against Kavanaugh permanently.

(2) Creative Next Steps to Flip New York State True Blue

The Creative Resistance created the videos that helped explain the IDC to voters in New York State. The group says, "We have now elected better Democrats but the NY State Senate is still controlled by the Republicans. We need to flip at least one more seat on November 6th in Brooklyn, Long Island or upstate - and hopefully more - to turn it true blue. We will begin making videos for critical Red2Blue seats that can make the difference. Already, we are working on a video for Democrat Pat Strong who is challenging a Republican incumbent in the Hudson Valley." Join Monday's planning meeting to contribute your ideas.

Sign Up for Saturday Canvassing for Liuba Grechen Shirley
Liuba Grechen Shirley has been endorsed by Indivisible Upper East Side in her run for Congress in New York District 2 (Long Island) against the Republican incumbent Peter King. We are organizing a group to canvass on her behalf this Saturday, September 22. Face-to-face conversations with other voters are the best way to increase turnout. Confirm your attendance by RSVPing on Facebook OR emailing us (you don't have to do both; also, if you signed up at last week's meeting, you don't have to do it again). We'll have more information on the logistics once we know how many people are participating.

It is recommended that you compose a personalized message based on the accusation of sexual assault as well as Kavanaugh's performance at the hearings and the suppression of documentation related to his career. Suggested opening sentence is:
I am not a constituent of yours but I am writing because your vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will affect the entire nation for decades.

Last week, Trump continued his abuse of Puerto Rico by lying about the casualties the island suffered during Hurricane Maria last year. Our fellow Americans living in Puerto Rico deserve better. Volunteer With Democratic Candidates
This Thursday is Primary Day, meaning its our big opportunity to flip the New York State senate "True Blue" by voting out the fake Democrats who vote with Republicans as members of the Independent Democratic Conference. In these last crucial days, you are strongly urged to contact the IDC challengers' campaigns directly to volunteer. To find calendars of volunteer opportunities, click here, then locate the tabs with the candidates' names on them at the bottom of your screen.
- You can also help by printing these posters to display in your apartment building or workplace. Local businesses are often amenable to putting up signs. Ask the nearest store or restaurant to hang one up!

Take the time to personally discuss Thursday's primary with friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues anywhere in New York State. They might not realize it is Primary Day. They might not realize how important this primary is and how close we are to making real change. You can also use this text as a short description: "Eight New York State 'Democratic' Senators created the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) and refused to caucus with the Democrats, handing control of the state senate to Republicans in exchange for money, perks, and personal power."
- "Hot Air" is a series of ads featuring the IDC members as car dealership balloons flip-flopping between Democrat and Republican.
